  • Make Your First Video Game

    Our classic game design camp reimagined to include even more of what you love! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that gives you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, level design, graphics, sounds, and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience is necessary, just a desire to have fun! Student projects will be available on a password-protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program. Week Lesson/Activity 1 Introduction to GDevelop, interface overview, and the mandatory game design document creation to plan the project. 2 Utilize the guided platformer toolkit and begin the selection process for artwork for sprites, gathering all necessary visual elements 3 Creating GDevelop accounts and copying the template. Use the sprite splitter tool to create & organize new sprites for use in the game. 4 Animating sprites (e.g., the walking animation). Assigning the new sprites to objects to display unique character actions within the game engine. 5 Scene / stage editing, customizing the level with layers/backgrounds, and modifying the player behavior parameters. 6 Cloning & editing objects for level variation. Implement advanced structure by adding functioning buttons to stage select. 7 Focus on modifying the boss stage with unique code, then working with audio, and designing title/character select scenes. 8 Finalizing the project (last chance for polish), exporting projects, final project upload, and the parent showcase.

    This beginner game development course is designed to get elementary-aged students excited about technology through hands-on and engaging learning activities. Recreate classic video games while exploring level design and digital arts concepts. Experience child-friendly software while learning the game development. Week Lesson/Activity 1 Introduction to Flowlab, basic navigation, and setting up a project. Editing basic objects and sprites. 2 Understanding playtesting and its importance in game design. Creating a basic level in the Space Pilot Game. 3 Final project demonstration and playtesting, introduction to lesson objectives and game vision, creating new objects and sprites. 4 Understanding and applying player movement behavior bundles, using platforms and doors to create multi-level games, and exploring art design and sprite editing. 5 Reviewing previous work, lesson objectives and game vision, implementing spikes, coins, and gravity changers. 6 Using keys and gates to create puzzles, further exploration of art and level design, and implementing enemies and laser obstacles. 7 Using rock projectiles and breakable walls, designing levels with collectibles, enemies, and interactive objects. 8 Student survey, lesson objectives and game vision, creating and using trampolines and mystery boxes, building a tutorial level with UI elements, final project completion, and showcase.
