    Drumline is an exciting course within the world of marching percussion where marching snares, tenors, and basses are the focus! This is a performance class where students learn the value of teamwork, rhythm, and count. All equipment will be provided during class. Week Skills Lesson/Activity 1 Counting and Constructing a Beat Students will learn the principals of counting and construct a beat that incorporates the hi-hats, snare drum, and bass drum. 2 Holding Drum Sticks Students will learn how to hold drum sticks properly and start playing on drum pads. 3 Playing Snare Drums and Drum Set Posture Students will learn the proper posture when playing the drums. 4 Counting Students will learn about counting and playing at the same time. 5 Singles and Doubles Students will learn singles and doubles and practice with a metronome. 6 Song Selection, Singles and Doubles (continuation) Students will select a song and practice the beats. 7 Practice for Recital, Singles and Doubles (continuation) Students will continue to practice for their recital performance. 8 Recital Day Parents will be invited to the last class to see their child’s performance.
  • Young Game Designers

    This beginner game development course is designed to get elementary-aged students excited about technology through hands-on and engaging learning activities. Recreate classic video games while exploring level design and digital arts concepts. Experience child-friendly software while learning the game development. Week Lesson/Activity 1 Introduction to Flowlab, basic navigation, and setting up a project. Editing basic objects and sprites. 2 Understanding playtesting and its importance in game design. Creating a basic level in the Space Pilot Game. 3 Final project demonstration and playtesting, introduction to lesson objectives and game vision, creating new objects and sprites. 4 Understanding and applying player movement behavior bundles, using platforms and doors to create multi-level games, and exploring art design and sprite editing. 5 Reviewing previous work, lesson objectives and game vision, implementing spikes, coins, and gravity changers. 6 Using keys and gates to create puzzles, further exploration of art and level design, and implementing enemies and laser obstacles. 7 Using rock projectiles and breakable walls, designing levels with collectibles, enemies, and interactive objects. 8 Student survey, lesson objectives and game vision, creating and using trampolines and mystery boxes, building a tutorial level with UI elements, final project completion, and showcase.

    Join this invention packed class where problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity will be challenged with time-based challenges. This wildly popular island has STEAM teams engineering their way through the diverse habitats of the Animal Kingdom. Busy Beehive, Plankton Bay, Penguin Iceberg, Jellyfish Junction, and Elephant Bridge are a few highlights of the Animal Island experience. Week Challenge name Description 1 Jellyfish Junction Understand what a jellyfish is and how it lives. Investigate to determine whether mixing two or more substances results in new substances. 2 Penguin Iceberg Learn about the penguins of Antarctica and their distinct physical features. Learn how penguins move through the snow, including waddling, hopping, and tobogganing. Design a Penguin Toboggan ride using various Toboggan/sled designs. 3 Anaconda Squeeze Learn about the Anaconda snakes that live in the rainforest and the way they squeeze their prey. Students will create a spiral Anaconda squeeze ride for a marble. 4 Plankton Bay Learn about plankton and identify adaptations. Learn about neutral buoyancy. Make plankton designs that increase surface area to decrease sinking speed. 5 Monkey Playground Use the Engineering Process to create a scale model Monkey Playground to present to the City Planners. Make scale models of monkeys to test the playground. 6 Jaguar Claw Students will learn about the Rainforest Food Chain and the jaguar at the top of the chain. They will use problem solving, the scientific method, and creativity to build a Jaguar’s Claw game using a pulley system and magnets. 7 Pet Emergency Room Learn how pets with disabilities can be helped just like humans They use creative and critical thinking skills to build wheelchairs and how wheels and axles can help move objects. 8 Busy Beehive Learn about bee hives and design and construct a honeycomb. Learn the difference between a hexagon and a hexagonal prism and how to make a model bee fly using the power of elasticity.
