    In this beginner-friendly crochet class, students will learn how to turn yarn into amazing masterpieces Over the course, students will learn basic stitches, practice simple patterns, and complete projects that they will be proud of. Week Skills 1 Learning the art of Crochet (holding the crochet needle in one hand and holding the yarn in the other. 2 Crochet a chain stitch and or magic ring; along with learning how to crochet by crochet. 3 Repeat week 1 and 2. 4 Learning to crochet (students will be given a choice to select what they would like to crochet for their project. For example, a scarf, hat, critter, small blanket, pillow, mittens, and so on.) 5-9 Repeat of 1-4 10 Present crochet project to parents.

Students will set off on a hands-on tour of global ceramic traditions while mastering sculpting and painting skills using both hand-building and the pottery wheel. Each class is an adventure—young claymakers pinch, coil, and shape their creations as they "stamp" their passports through time and place. From dragons to tiles, amulets to pots, every project sparks imagination and creativity. Dive into vibrant art-making that builds fine motor skills, cultural awareness, and a love of learning! Project Description Objectives Lesson 1: Native American Pinchpot Students make a pinchpot, learn rolling & pinching techniques, and explore how this piece was used by Native Americans and around the ancient world. 1. Use palms to roll a ball of clay and fingers and thumb to pinch clay walls. 2. Identify styles and uses of Native American pottery. 3. Sculpt a pinch pot. Lesson 2: Egyptian Scarab Beetle Amulets Students make an amulet, learn flattening & carving techniques, and explore how art can have religious and cultural meaning. 1. Flatten clay using tools and hands and carve into a clay slab. 2. Discuss the cultural significance of beetles in Egypt and analyze their symbolic meaning in art. 3. Sculpt an amulet with a beetle in the Egyptian style. Lesson 3: Intro to Painting & the Pottery Wheel Students paint their pottery, learn to paint using multiple coats and patterns, and discover the history of painting pottery. Each student is given the opportunity to create an experimental piece on the wheel, and they learn about the history of the pottery wheel in the Near East and around the world. 1. Create a pattern with paint using contrast and repetition. 2. Paint their pottery pieces with multiple coats. 3. Use the potter’s wheel safely and implement basic wheel strategies to raise a piece. Lesson 4: Burkina Faso Coil Pot Students make a coil pot, learn snaking & coiling techniques, and explore the practical uses of coil pots in Western Africa. 1. Discuss the creation and uses of coil pots in Burkina Faso and other parts of Western Africa. 2. Make a durable snake of clay by rolling and estimating its thickness and length. 3. Sculpt a coil pot. Lesson 5: Mexican Sun Faces Students make a sun face, learn slipping & scoring techniques, and explore folk art traditions. 1. Attach pieces of clay to a base using slipping and scoring techniques. 2. Define folk art, identify common traditions, and examine its significance in Mexico and other regions. 3. Sculpt a sun that resembles the traditional Aztec piece. Lesson 6: Painting Colors & Pottery Wheel Bowl Shape Students paint their pottery, learn about color theory and mixing colors, and explore the cultural significance of colors. Students experiment with making a bowl-shaped figure on the wheel. Note: Students cannot drink or eat from their pottery creation. 1. Define primary, secondary, and tertiary colors and use paints to mix them. 2. Explain the personal and cultural significance of colors. 3. Throw a pottery piece on the potter’s wheel, using pulling strategies to form a bowl shape. Lesson 7: Portuguese Azulejos Students make a tile, learn to slap clay into a square, and explore the decorative and storytelling power of ceramics. 1. Use hands and tools to form a clay slab in a square. 2. Examine humans’ long history of using carving to create narratives in Europe and around the world. 3. Carve a personally significant object into a tile in the azulejo style. Lesson 8: Indian Rimmed Dish Students make a flat dish, learn pulling & rim-making techniques, and explore the symbolism of natural objects in South Asia. 1. Pull the sides of a plate to create a rim. 2. Explain the symbolic value of natural objects (leaves, lotus flowers, vines, etc.) in India and elsewhere in South Asia. 3. Create a round plate with a rim that imitates an Indian-style dish. Lesson 9: Chinese Dragon Students make a Chinese dragon, learn intricate carving and free-standing sculpting techniques, and explore the history of mythical creatures in Asian pottery. 1. Combine multiple strategies (carving, snaking, slipping, scoring, etc.) to create a freestanding pottery piece. 2. Discuss mythical creatures and their cultural significance in China and around the world. 3. Sculpt a dragon. Lesson 10: Painting Symbols & Mini Greek Vase on Pottery Wheel Students paint their pottery, learn to paint objects, and explore the symbolic meaning of objects in different cultures. They practice making a shape inspired by a Greek vase on the pottery wheel. 1. Paint objects onto their pottery pieces. 2. Discuss the symbolic meaning of objects in painting around the world. 3. Throw a piece on the potter’s wheel and use pulling techniques to shape it into a vase resembling an amphora shape.
  • Code Sphero Bolt

    Sphero is an adorable, durable, interactive—you guessed it—spherebolt. Its functionality is almost boundless. Students will use the Sphero has a programmable 8x8 LED matrix, so students can code it to change colors when Sphero rolls, stops or starts, reaches a goal, or whenever else they’d like. Coding sounds hard, but our younger coders utilize what’s called block coding. This means they’re not typing out code by hand—which can be complicated for such an age group—but rather dragging visual blocks into the coding area and connecting them. Week Build Lesson/Activity 1 What is a Sphero Students will be introduced to the bot and how to care for their bot, including how to navigate the tablet with the app. 2 Draw 1 Students will learn to code the bot to draw shapes and how to convert the code into other languages. 3 Generative Art & AI Students will create artwork using code, how to control the robot moves and how code is used to control AI. 4 Block 1 How to create a new program on a block canvas. How to code roll block, speed, heading and duration. 5 Block 2 Light and sounds – students will be challenged to create a story to execute asynchronously and synchronously and how to use delay blocks. 6 Bolt meets ChatGPT How AI chatbots like ChatGPT work, modify JavaScript programs to make Bolt introduce itself. Advantages and disadvantages of AI chatbots. 7 TEXT 1 Hello World! What makes JavaScript useful, modify and a text program, define and use functions. 8 Matrix Emotions Students will program their own animation on Bolt LED Matrix. 9 On Collision Event Pong Program Bolt to respond to events and modify a game to make it more fun. 10 Bolt Challenge Cards How much do you know – lets challenge that answer. This introductory level food literacy program teaches simple cooking techniques, food origins, seasonal recipes, and kitchen safety while having hands-on fun!     Adventure Quest in Latin America is an exciting, immersive thematic unit that takes children on a vibrant cultural journey through México, Perú, Argentina, Colombia, and Chile. Throughout the unit, students explore each country’s geography, traditions, music, animals, foods, and famous landmarks while building Spanish vocabulary and practicing simple conversational structures. Through interactive games, storytelling, and movement-based activities, children experience the rich diversity of Latin America in a playful and engaging way. Each class highlights a destination, allowing students to compare cultures, celebrate unique traditions, and develop cultural awareness while strengthening language skills in a dynamic, fun, and exploratory learning environment. We offer a different thematic unit each semester so children can keep learning about different things and stay engaged while learning Spanish. Families will have access to our digital platform, where they can download songs, games, activities, guides, and the complete thematic unit book.
