Watercolor Pencils

This fun visual art class focuses on creating compositions using traditional visions (portraits,landscapes, and still life) as the subject matter. Students will learn and utilize two techniques (graphite transfer and grid technique) to first develop their compositions.

Semester at a Glance

Week Skills Lesson/Activity
1 Tools and Styles and Foundation Overview – Art History Students will get familiar with tools and the history of watercolor. Students will learn brushstroke styles and color theory.
2 Color Theory and Techniques Students will learn color theory and learn about perspectives to develop a discerning eye. Cold press or hot press, and warm versus cool colors. Sketching techniques started.
3 Shading Still Life Students will select begin working on their still life sketch and outline. Students will learn shading, light versus dark colors and layering.
4 Landscapes and Animals and Pencil/ Charcoal Overlay Students will learn composition and balance. Students will sketch and begin their piece using animal subjects in a landscape. Students will combine both pencil/ charcoal work and watercolor overlay.
5 Salt Technique with Planets and Outerspace Students will paint planets in their third watercolor artwork. Tips on how to improve through different brush size and salt overlay/technique.
6 Glazing and Layering Techniques Students will paint an underwater scene in their fourth artwork. Tips on glazing and layering.
7 Resist and Blending Techniques Students will learn about using gum glue to allow for negative space within their fifth artwork of choice.
8 Wet on wet and Blotting Techniques Students will create their sixth work of art of any choice or subject matter for their final exhibition. Learning the wet on wet technique and applying all six techniques learned. Instructor individual feedback provided.
9 Final Artwork of Choice Students will continue to work on and complete their final artwork for student sharing. Instructor individual feedback provided.
10 Final Showcase How to photograph and document your artwork. Final exhibition with student sharing showcase and critique.
