Animal Island

Success Zone / Madden -
2025 Fall

Join this invention packed class where problem-solving, teamwork, and creativity will be challenged with time-based challenges. This wildly popular island has STEAM teams engineering their way through the diverse habitats of the Animal Kingdom. Busy Beehive, Plankton Bay, Penguin Iceberg, Jellyfish Junction, and Elephant Bridge are a few highlights of the Animal Island experience.

Week Challenge name Description
1 Jellyfish Junction Understand what a jellyfish is and how it lives. Investigate to determine whether mixing two or more substances results in new substances.
2 Penguin Iceberg Learn about the penguins of Antarctica and their distinct physical features. Learn how penguins move through the snow, including waddling, hopping, and tobogganing. Design a Penguin Toboggan ride using various Toboggan/sled designs.
3 Anaconda Squeeze Learn about the Anaconda snakes that live in the rainforest and the way they squeeze their prey. Students will create a spiral Anaconda squeeze ride for a marble.
4 Plankton Bay Learn about plankton and identify adaptations. Learn about neutral buoyancy. Make plankton designs that increase surface area to decrease sinking speed.
5 Monkey Playground Use the Engineering Process to create a scale model Monkey Playground to present to the City Planners. Make scale models of monkeys to test the playground.
6 Jaguar Claw Students will learn about the Rainforest Food Chain and the jaguar at the top of the chain. They will use problem solving, the scientific method, and creativity to build a Jaguar’s Claw game using a pulley system and magnets.
7 Pet Emergency Room Learn how pets with disabilities can be helped just like humans They use creative and critical thinking skills to build wheelchairs and how wheels and axles can help move objects.
8 Busy Beehive Learn about bee hives and design and construct a honeycomb. Learn the difference between a hexagon and a hexagonal prism and how to make a model bee fly using the power of elasticity.
9 Shark Bait Cove Learn about the ocean ecosystem, and every living plant, animal, and fish must have energy to survive. Learn about sharks and make a shark bait game by designing a slingshot.
10 Grizzly Bear campground Learn about how humans interact with wild animals in the wild And how to stay safe while camping. Design Pulleys, how they work, and explore applications and ideas, using materials to build the physical model.
