STEM Odyssey with Mad Science

Success Zone / Lexington Creek -
2025 Fall

Put on your lab coats and get ready to STEM with Mad Science. Our goal is to make science fun, relatable and easy to learn! Every week we will explore a different science topic with experiments and exciting discussions that will be guided by a specially trained Mad Scientist.

Week Theme Lesson/Activity
1 Sonic Sounds Uncover the source of sound. Tap into sound wave transmission and fill your ears with vibrations. Create a story with sound effects and change the pitch of your voice. Use your Tone Tube to stretch out the noise-making fun.
2 Lights, Color, Action Celebrate the science of color. Split your name in ink and reveal numbers with color filters. Make a rainbow out of white light and try on diffraction lenses. Color the world with your very own Technicolor Blender to explore how light color combine.
3 Magnetic Magic Explore the power of magnets. Create electromagnets and control a compass needle. See a magnetic accelerator in action. Take home your very own Magnet Lab to continue your research about how magnets work in everyday life.
4 Optical Illusions Can your eyes trick your brain? Discover how mirrors and their reflections can confuse your sight. Make popular illusions out of everyday materials. Put together a Periscope to see above and beyond as your turn a pair of mirrors into a tool.
5 Acids & Bases Discover the world of pH and find out what acid and base is. Test certain solutions with pH strips and see how strong a base or acid are and compare them to the pH scale. Students will also observe a couple of acid-base reactions and see the chemical changes that occur.
6 Dinosaurs Students examine fossil casts and explore the differences in the teeth of herbivorous and carnivorous dinosaurs. After learning about fossilization, children embark on a mini fossil excavation and make a case of a dinosaur tooth to take home.
7 Harness the Wind Air and wind are two very different things, and the students will get to discover what they are. They will go over Bernoulli’s Principle and find out how this principle can help flight.
8 Matter of Fact Students explore molecules and the forces that hold atoms together. They learn to sort out differences between physical and chemical changes and mix up a batch of fun science to stretch their learning at home.
9 Measure for Measure Students trek through a treasure trail and learn the proper techniques of measuring objects. From shoe size to hand spans to the metric system, the greatest treasure comes from using critical thinking and measuring skills to solve a challenge.
10 Harnessing Heat Take on temperature. Shake up a storm and see how friction creates heat. Feel how hot and cold can change at a touch. Apply your red-hot knowledge on your very own Heat Sheet to take home to continue your exploration of temperature.
